Climb for climate justice

Jun 17, 2022

On May 16, 2022, Bishnu Bhusal, at 62 years of age, became the first lawyer to climb Mount Everest, raising his voice for environmental justice, on the same day as Buddha Jayanti, the most sacred day on the Buddhist calendar.

Advocate Bhusal set out on April 15 to climb Mount Everest. At the summit, Bhusal held various banners, including a Nepal Bar Association’s banner with the slogan “Climbing for Climate Justice – Everest is melting” and flag with the Pro Public and Friends of Earth Nepal logos that read “Stop carbon emission and conserve world heritage for future generations.”

This was not Bhusal’s first time climbing for climate justice. In October 2021, he completed an expedition to the summit of Ramdung Mountain. Pro Public Senior Advocate Prakashmani Sharma said the objective behind scaling the mountains is to draw global attention to the impact of climate change on ecosystems and people’s livelihoods in Nepal.
