Climate change and the global energy crisis threaten the lives and livelihoods of billions of people worldwide. Climate scientists agree that human activities produce greenhouse gases that are heating the planet. The primary sources of greenhouse gases are the burning of fossil fuels for energy, industry and transport, industrial agriculture, and deforestation.
The Asia Pacific region is home to the majority of the world’s most climate-vulnerable communities. For decades the region has endured devastating climate impacts: extreme heat, drought, and fire on the one hand; excessive monsoon rains, floods, and mudslides on the other.
In 2015 in Paris, 194 countries made a commitment that they would drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. But while most nations in the Asia Pacific region have signed and ratified the Paris Agreement, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.
Action to curb greenhouse gas emissions by replacing dirty energy with renewable alternatives has never been more important for the safety of people in the Asia Pacific region.
A transformation of the energy system is fundamental to system change and tackling climate change. It entails democratic answers to the fundamental questions: for whom and what is energy produced? It means a total departure from fossil fuel reliance and corporate control.
Energy sovereignty is one key solution, allowing communities to choose sustainable energy sources and develop healthy consumption patterns to create sustainable societies.
Friends of the Earth is part of a growing, diverse and effective global movement to resist dirty energy, champion alternative energy sources, and push for climate justice.
What we need more than ever is people power to mobilise action on climate. Join us in the fight for climate justice!
