Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) has secured a major victory against a land grabber in Bangladesh. Approximately 748 acres of farmlands and wetlands in Sonargoan, Bangladesh, had been grabbed by two private companies owned by Mr. Noor Ali, Unique Property Development Ltd (UPDL) and Sonargaon Economic Zone (SEZ). BELA has been fighting legally against this business giant since 2014 to protect the land rights of affected farmers. In December, the High Court ordered the grabbed lands to be restored, and compensation be given to farmers who suffered damages.  “If the ecology and environment cannot be protected, human beings cannot survive,” the judge said.

Congratulations BELA!
