Friends of the Earth International and Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific condemn the recent brutal attacks in Sri Lanka which have left more than 250 innocent people dead and over 500 wounded. With a bloody history of over three decades of civil war, Sri Lanka has only just begun rebuilding her injured nation and keeping peace within the community.
“In our work we consider love and nature are the true forces to build the peace around the world. The planet is dying every day due to overconsumption, destruction of natural resources, environmental pollution and increased inequality in societies, which are all results of the current neoliberal model. We require united peaceful actions and not barbaric actions such as this. Killing innocent people will not build that peaceful and equal society.”
Hemantha Withanage, Director of Centre for Environmental Justice/Friends of the Earth Sri Lanka
“Friends of the Earth International and Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific join the international community in denouncing these horrific attacks and the use of violence against innocent people. We stand in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka and the families of the victims. We demand that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice. It is now time for everyone to join forces to end and eradicate all forms of violence at its source.”
Karin Nansen, Chair of Friends of the Earth International
